Why Attic Insulation Matters

Heat flows from warm areas to cool areas. If your home does not have the proper attic insulation, warmed indoor air will flow to the attic in the winter and hot air from the attic will flow into your home in the summer. This causes your heating system to be overworked in the winter and your air conditioner to be overworked in the summer, resulting in higher utility bills and a shorter life span for your HVAC system. Insulation installation is a low-cost way to extend the life of your system.

Many older homes do not have the proper amount of attic insulation. To determine if you would benefit from additional insulation in your attic, measure the depth of the insulation with a tape measure in at least 10 places in your attic. Average the numbers together to determine the average thickness. If the average number is less than 16 inches, you need more insulation.
